The text provides a biography of Pearl S. Buck, an acclaimed author and humanitarian known for her deep understanding of Chinese culture and her efforts to promote mutual understanding between Asia and the West.
Peart L Buck won world-wide recognition as an outstanding author and humanitarian. Born in 1892 in West Virginia, she grew up in China, where her parents were missionaries. At 17 she came to America to attend Randolph-Macon College, but returned to China in 1914 to teach English literature. Pearl Buck's best-known work, The Good Earth, was published in 1931 and won the 1932 Pulitzer Prize. An epic portrayal of Chinese farm life, this novel reflects the author's deep understanding and appreciation of Chinese culture and philosophy. In 1938 she became the first American woman to receive the Nobel prize for literature. In all, Pearl Buck wrote more than 65 books and hundreds of short stories and essays, many of which urge a mutual understanding between the peoples of Asia and the West. Deeply concerned with the welfare of children of mixed American-Asian parentage, she founded an adoption agency in 1949 and the Pearl S. Buck Foundation in 1964 to care for and educate Amerasian children living in Asia. In recognition of her leadership, Pearl Buck received the highest award of honor from the government of Korea in June 1967. By the time of her death in 1973, Pearl Buck had received hundreds of awards for her humanitarianism.
