Louis Armstrong, America's premier jazz musician, became famous throughout the world for his innovative trumpet playing. Born in 1900 in New Orleans, home of Dixieland jazz, he was the prime mover in its development into a national art form. Armstrong learned to play the bugle at the age of 12, and by the time he was 17 he was an ac-complished cornet player. He spent several summers playing Mississippi River excursion boats. In 1922 he moved to Chicago to play in the band of his idol, Joe (King) Oliver. Five years later Armstrong had his own group. With the "Hot Five" and the "Hot Seven," he made jazz recordings con-sidered classics today. By this time his genius at improvisa-tion had created a style that would inspire jazz musicians and arrangers for years to come. During the 1930s and 1940s "Satchmo," as he was popularly called, played with big bands, but returned to a small group in 1947. In 1955 and 1956 Armstrong made extensive tours through western Europe and Africa, becoming known as America's goodwill ambassador. His instrumental ability and personal charm won friends for America wherever he played. At the time of his death in 1971, Louis Armstrong had brought joy to mil-lions of fans around the world.
