Helen Keller is one of the most universally admired American women, triumphed over the twin handicaps of deafness and blindness. Born in 1880 in Alabama, Helen Keller was struck with a serious illness as an infant which deprived her of her sight and hearing. At the age of six, she was placed under the care of Anne Mansfield Sullivan, who was to be Helen Keller's teacher and companion for more than 40 years. With Miss Sullivan's patient help, Helen Keller learned to read and write in Braille. She soon learned to speak and, in 1904, graduated with honors from Radcliffe College. While in college. Helen Keller began her career as an author. Her most popular work The Story of My Life, appeared in 1902. Her deep concern for the problems of the blind and the deaf-blind resulted in the establishment of the first state commission for the blind in Massachusetts. In 1924 she became a member of the staff of the American Foundation for the Blind. In 1946 she was appointed counselor on international relations for the American Foundation for Overseas Blind. She devoted the next 11 years to world tours to give encouragement to the blind and handicapped. Before her death in 1968, she received awards from many governments in recognition of her service to humanity.
