The medallion commemorates the historic moment General MacArthur waded ashore at Leyte Gulf, fulfilling his famous promise of "I shall return" during World War II.
Douglas Mac Arthur was the military hero who led Allied armies to victory over Japan in World War II, and administered the postwar occupation of Japan. MacArthur. a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, graduated from West Point in 1903. During World War I, he helped organize and command the famed Rainbow Division of the American Expeditionary Force. In 1930, President Hoover named MacArthur chief of staff of the U.S. Army. On completion of this duty, he was appointed military adviser to the Philippines, and when war threatened in the Pacific, he was appointed commander of the U.S. Army forces in the Far East. When the Japanese attacked the Philippines, President Roosevelt ordered Mac-Arthur to Australia to become commander of the Allied forces in the Pacific. On the trip to Melbourne, he made his famous declaration: "I shall return." And return he did, two years later, wading ashore with his troops for the successful landing at Leyte. On September 2, 1945, MacArthur received the formal surrender of the Japanese aboard the battleship Missouri in Tokyo Bay. Under his direction, the social and economic structure of the shattered nation was rebuilt. After serving in Korea, he remained prominent in business and politics until his death in 1964.
