This coin is a Bahamian 2 Dollar silver coin, often referred to as the "Flamingo" coin due to its reverse design. It features two flamingos, the national bird of the Bahamas, facing each other in front of a rising sun.
This collectible item is a Bahamas two-dollar silver proof coin issued between 1974 and 1976.
Minted with permission from the Bahamas Monetary Authority.
This coin has been redesigned to reflect the achievement of independence.
Each coin bears the national coat of arms, which formerly appeared only on the five-dollar coin. This heraldic design is rich with the history and beauty of the Bahamas. The arms depict Columbus's flagship, Santa Maria. Above, a resplendent rising sun evokes both the warmth of the tropical islands and the country's bright future. A blue marlin and a flamingo, the national bird, flank the shield.
A ribbon bears the national motto - Forward, Upward, Onward, Together.
The five-dollar coin is the first Bahamian coin to depict the new national flag. The remaining coins in the set portray the natural beauty of the islands — the graceful flamingoes on the two-dollar coin, the conch shell on the one-dollar coin, the marlin on the fifty-cent piece, the native sloop on the twenty-five cent piece, the pineapple on the five-cent piece and the starfish on the one-cent piece. The square fifteen-cent piece and the scalloped ten-cent piece add further interest to this handsome coinage.
