This coin celebrates the 100th anniversary of Parks Canada, the world's first system of national parks, founded in 1911.
Design:
The reverse design, by Luc Normandin, features stylized flora and fauna, including four endangered ecological treasures: a Whooping Crane, Southern Maidenhair Fern, Western Fringed Prairie Orchid, and a Kentucky Coffee Tree, all cradled in the hands of a young Canadian.
Significance:
It commemorates Canada's extensive system of national parks, historical sites, and marine conservation areas, and highlights Parks Canada's role in conserving Canada's natural heritage.
This coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Susanna Blunt. The inscription "ELIZABETH II D G REGINA" encircles the portrait, which translates to "Elizabeth II, by the Grace of God, Queen".
