Official Commemorative Issue
This image shows a commemorative issue honoring the first coins struck in Monaco, specifically on November 9, 1976.
This commemorative piece celebrates the historical event of the first coinage in Monaco's history.
The first coins in Monaco were issued in 1640 under Prince Honoré II, who also received the Collar of the Golden Fleece from King Philip IV of Spain.
The commemorated coin, a two-gros silver coin, featured a bust of Prince Honoré II and Saint Dévote on its reverse, with the Latin inscription "Nos Ab Hoste Protege" ("Protect us from the enemy").
This commemorative issue was sculpted by Clayton Blaker and minted by The Franklin Mint, capturing the hand-minting process in detail.
