Historical Significance: The Battle of the Coral Sea, fought from May 4–8, 1942, in the waters east of New Guinea and south of the Bismarck Islands, was a major naval engagement of the Pacific Theatre of World War II. It marked the first naval battle in which opposing fleets from the Imperial Japanese Navy and Allied forces of the United States and Australia did not sight or fire directly upon each other, instead relying entirely on carrier-based aircraft to conduct the fighting.
