The original Indian Head cent was a one-cent coin produced by the U.S. Mint from 1859 to 1909. 

The design is inspired by the artwork of sculptor James Earle Fraser for the U.S. Buffalo Nickel, minted from 1913 to 1938, which featured a composite portrait of several Native American chiefs.
