Eleanor Roosevelt, the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, won world-wide recognition for her humanitarian work. Probably the most politically active first lady, she be-came a distinguished public figure in her own right. Born in 1884 in New York, Eleanor Roosevelt began her lifelong interest in political and social work in the 1920s when she joined the board of the New York State League of Women Voters. When her husband was elected President in 1933, she began traveling extensively throughout the United States. She gave public lectures and kept her husband in-formed about public opinion. She also wrote a syndicated newspaper column, magazine articles and gave radio talks. During World War II, Mrs. Roosevelt traveled to many parts of the world, and began campaigning for the rights of minority groups. In 1945 President Roosevelt died in office. Later that year, President Truman appointed Mrs. Roosevelt a delegate to the United Nations General Assembly. In April 1946 she was elected chairman of the UN Commission on Human Rights. In this position she helped to draft and gain acceptance for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. At the time of her death in 1962, Eleanor Roosevelt was recognized as one of the world's most influential figures.
