A native of Clark, Missouri, Bradley graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1915. In 1941, at the age of 48, he became the first of his class to be appointed a brigadier general. Two years later he went over-seas and soon became commander of the Second Army Corps in North Africa and later in Sicily. In 1944 General Eisenhower chose Bradley as commander of U.S. ground forces for the invasion of Normandy. In August of that year he was appointed commander of the Twelfth Army Group. The largest fighting force ever assembled in battle, Bradley's command numbered about one million men organized in over 40 combat divisions. In addition to his reputation as an emi-nent tactician, Bradley earned great popularity because of his concern for the lives of his troops. After the war he served as administrator of veterans' affairs for two years. In 1948 he became chief of staff of the U.S. Army. The following year Bradley was appointed first chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
