Edgar Hoover ex directed the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1924 until his death in 1972. A graduate of George Washington University, he was admitted to the bar in 1917 and entered the Department of Justice where he served as special assistant to the attorney general. He then became director of the department's Bureau of Investigation which was reorganized with wider powers in 1933 and re-named the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1935. Hoover is credited with eliminating politics from FBI appointments, with setting up better recruiting and training methods and with developing the FBI into one of the world's most efficient law-enforcement agencies. The bureau was influential in raising the standards of police work throughout the United States. As FBI director, Hoover recognized the importance of improved technical methods and provided many services to local and state police forces, including fingerprint files, laboratory services and the training of police officials through local and regional programs. Hoover was known for his anti-Communist and anti-subversive views, and the FBI was given wide intelligence and counterespionage functions as well as the principal responsibility for protecting U.S. internal security against foreign agents.

This is a Reed & Barton Damascene Insculpture etching featuring J.
